This simple yet profound idea serves as a guiding principle, shaping how he approaches every design challenge.
James has used his career in architecture as a passport to explore the country, working on a wide range of building types in diverse settings. His philosophy? “Have work, will travel.”
His passion for alternative delivery methods was sparked in a college design-build studio, where he first saw the value of viewing projects through a builder’s lens. Today, he thrives on combining creativity with constructability, embracing the challenges that come with bringing innovative ideas to life. Over the years, James has honed his ability to uncover beauty in common building materials and breathe new life into older structures through thoughtful renovation.
One of his proudest achievements is his work on the Kaiser Family Foundation headquarters in San Francisco. The project includes an interpretive graphic telling KFF’s history and a flexible event space offered free to other organizations—a testament to his commitment to designing spaces that uplift and empower their users.
When James isn’t designing, you’ll likely find him in, on, or under the water. An avid swimmer, angler, and canoeist, he loves exploring California’s coastline and waterways—though he wishes he had more time for these adventures.
