“Just because you like LEGOs and build a cardboard castle as a kid doesn’t mean you’re going to be an architect… although I guess it did for me.”
Gavin sees architecture as a puzzle—problem-solving at its most creative and rewarding. His process starts with the simplicity of pencil and paper, sketching out ideas that are loose, fresh, and full of possibility. Once the concept takes shape, he turns to the computer for scale and to apply the sometimes pesky limits of reality. But no matter how advanced the software gets, he never fully puts the pencil down—after all, some ideas need a human touch to come to life.
An avid long-distance cyclist, Gavin explores the world at a pace that lets him truly take it all in. “When I’m on long bike tours, I get into a different mode. It’s slower, more intentional, and you really experience the journey,” he says. His dream? To take his two kids on a cross-country biking adventure—a dream that feels within reach now that they’ve graduated from balance bikes and are pedaling alongside him.
It’s no surprise that he’s passionate about sustainable design. For him, creating responsible buildings and experimenting with innovative materials is just another kind of puzzle to solve. Whether it’s a design challenge or a bike route, Gavin’s approach is thoughtful, intentional, and always forward-thinking—proving that every journey, on two wheels or otherwise, is worth savoring.
