Jocelyn Lawrence Barish dreams of designing a building that welcomes water rather than working to keep it out at all costs. “Water doesn’t want to be told where to go,” she says. “And water gets its way more than we’d like to admit.” As a former marine biology teacher, she knows a bit about water. In architecture, she admires design that relates to its surroundings in a friendly way and helps people connect with the rest of the natural world.

Jocelyn is an avid hiker. She wants to see wild creatures and plants in their natural habitat. She’s insatiably curious, and likes that you never stop learning in architecture. She enjoys talking to experts from all walks of life – whether about ecological philosophy or waterproofing a foundation.

Her years of teaching trained her to be a problem solver and a totally comfortable public speaker. And if you need her to sing, she can do that too: she has an amazing repertoire of lyrics stored in her brain. Could “Singing in the Rain” be among them?
